Compliance & Certification

What does "SABS-approved" mean?+
SABS stands for the South African Bureau of Standards. A SABS-approved sign has been independently tested and certified to meet the relevant South African National Standard (SANS). This is often required by the Occupational Health and Safety Act and building regulations.
What is SANS 1186-1:2022?+
SANS 1186-1:2022 is the South African National Standard for symbolic safety signs. It specifies the design, colours, luminance, and durability requirements for compliant safety signage used in workplaces and public buildings.
Are safety signs legally required in South African workplaces?+
Yes. The Occupational Health and Safety Act (Act 85 of 1993) requires employers to display appropriate safety signs. Photoluminescent emergency exit signs are additionally required by the National Building Regulations. Our signs meet all applicable SANS standards.
Does your SABS permit cover SANS 1186-5:2022 for photoluminescent signs?+
Yes. Our SABS permit covers Symbolic Safety Signs Parts 1 and 5, which includes standard safety signs and photoluminescent safety signage manufactured to SANS 1186-5:2022.
What is a photoluminescent sign?+
Photoluminescent (glow-in-the-dark) signs absorb ambient light during normal conditions and emit a visible glow when the lights go out — such as during a power failure or emergency evacuation. They require no electricity and remain visible for hours, making them ideal for fire exits, stairwells, and escape routes.
